Lynton and Lynmouth are located in an area called by the Victorians England's 'Little Switzerland'; An unique water operated cliff railway dating back to 1890 joins the village of Lynton to its sister village of Lynmouth, 500ft below. In the 19th Century local economy struggled with trade and transport due to high cliffs separating the two coastal towns. The towns relied heavily on sea transport as travel over Exmoor was strenuous. The visitor's guide is typical of its era, replete with poetry and references to pixies and druids. However, it also contains a great deal of invaluable information about the early inhabitants extracted from lay subsidy rolls, and has as well, an interesting account of the Monmouth Rebellion in this part of Devon. It is dedicated to the Rev W S Halliday, MA, of Glenthorne, Lord of the Manor of Countisbury,. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books.
