War Memorial - Swansea Devonian Society

Transcribed by Jeff Coleman

There is a memorial in Brunswick Methodist Chapel in St. Helen's Road, Swansea erected by 'The Swansea Devonian Society, founded 1894 by S.J. DREW Esq.'

I think it is possible that this replaced an earlier memorial in Oxford Street Methodist Church, Swansea, which was destroyed in the Blitz. That chapel was originally a Bible Christian Chapel, known as Gam Street at one time, later a United Methodist Chapel, and known at one time as 'the Devon Chapel' because of the number of Devon people there.

Swansea is only about 38 miles as the crow flies from Barnstaple, and less from Ilfracombe, and in the 19th century regular ships brought migrants as well as goods from the West Country to Swansea.

The label at the top is a motto Semper Fidelis across a shield with three linked towers on it, and Devon underneath.

The inscription is 'To the Glory of God and in memory of those members who died for their country in the wars'
