"MILTON ABBOT is a pleasant and well-built village, on a gentle eminence, 6 miles N.W. by W. of Tavistock, and E.S.E. of Launceston, and has in its parish 1256 inhabitants, and 6617 acres of land, generally fertile and in pasturage, and including the hamlets, &c., of Foghanger, Quither, Edgcumbe, and Chillaton, and many scattered houses. The Duke of Bedford is lord of the manors of Milton Abbott, Foghanger, Week-Dabernon, and West Liddaton . . . [He] owns the greater part of the parish, and has a beautiful occasional seat here, called ENDSLEIGH COTTAGE, delightfully situated in the picturesque valley of the Tamar, in the midst of sylvan pleasure grounds, through which the river winds in a semi-circular reach, amidst some of the most romantic scenery in Devon and Cornwall. . . . Permission to view this earthly paradise may be obtained of the Duke's steward, at his office, in Tavistock. The Parish Church (St. Constantine,) is a large handsome structure, with a tower and six bells. It is in the perpendicular style, and has lately been repaired, cleansed, and beautified. . . . The Rev. St. Vincent Love Hammick, M.A., is the incumbent, and has a good residence, erected in 1838, . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

A parish in Tavistock Hundred, the Archdeaconry of Totnes and the Diocese of Exeter.
