Index prepared by Margaret Bailey

The Hambleden Viscountcy was created by Queen Victoria to honour William Henry Smith Jr., who died in 1891. His widow, Emily Danvers Smith, was named 1st Viscountess Hambleden, and upon her death in 1913, their son William Frederick Danvers Smith became 2nd Viscount Hambleden. It is this Lord Hambleden who is the subject of the article indexed here.

Lord Hambleden, known as Frederick Smith, was referred to by various names and titles during his lifetime:

Full name at birth: William Frederick Danvers Smith
Name by which he was commonly known: Frederick Smith
Title from 1891-1913: The Hon. Frederick Smith
Title from 1913-1928: Lord Hambleden (2nd Viscount Hambleden)

Many of Hambleden's activities crossed over two of these time periods; in order to give an orderly accounting of the major events in his life and to distinguish him from his son, the 3rd Viscount, all of his entries in the index have been arranged under the title 2nd Viscount Hambleden (Hambleden, 2nd Viscount).
