LEW (NORTH), a parish in the hundred of BLACKTORRINGTON, county of DEVON, 4 miles (S. W. by S.)from Hatherleigh, containing 868 inhabitants. The livingis a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Totness, anddiocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £27. 8. 9.,and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicatedto St. Thomas &agreave; Becket. At Redcliffe, withinthis parish, are the remains of an ancient chapel, andnear it a quarry of excellent freestone.
