Some Devonshire Field-Names, with suggestions as to their signification, by Edward Stanbury, of North Wyke near North Tawton

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 45, (1913), pp.479-488.

communicated by

C.H. Laycock

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s Buckfastleigh meeting, July 24th, 1913. The authors assert that field-names in Devon, having generally been handed down by agricultural labourers, are likely to retain more traces of Anglo-Saxon nomenclature than names of manors or towns where Norman-French or Latin influence would have been more dominant. Field names, they claim, are derived from; (a) The field’s size, shape, or suitability of soil for certain crops or stock, (b) Their situation, e.g. upper, lower, outer, or (c) The names of former owners or occupants. Intended primarily as an aid to genealogists, this index will focus particularly on the third (c) category. Mr. Stanbury's comments on the field-names included in the paper are supplemented by remarks from Miss Lega-Weekes and Mr. C. H. Laycock. The paper can be found in a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
