Steven Borough the Navigator

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 12 (1880), pp. 332-360.

by

Richard W. Cotton

Prepared by Michael Steer

Steven Borough (1525-1584), navigator, was born at Northam. In 1553 he took part in the expedition under Sir Hugh Willoughby to seek a northern passage to Cathay and India, serving as master of the Edward Bonaventure. In a second expedition, he discovered Kara Strait, between Novaya Zemlya and Vaygach Island. Around 1558, he visited the navigational school in Seville and returned to England with a copy of Martín Cortés de Albacar's Breve Compendio. This was translated by Richard Eden and published as the Art of Navigation in 1561. It became the first English navigation manual. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
