Will:
This is the last will and testament of I James Chappell of Appledore within the parish of Northam in the county of Devon gentleman.
First I give devise and bequeath unto the Rev’d Mr May of Brynsworthy in the county of Devon, the Rev’d George Burgess of Heanton in the county of Devon and John Luskey of Calstock in the county of Cornwall esq, all those my messuages lands tenements & chattles commonly called or known by the name of Trewithen now in the occupation of Mr John Budge, and also all that my messuages and tenements called Fudge Trefursdon Smallacombe and Trewortha now in the occupation of Mr Edward Jasper, and also all that my messuage & tenement now in the occupation of Mr George Edgcombe, together with all other my lands chattles whatsoever situate within the county of Cornwall, and also all that my messuage and tenement called Little Lashbrooke now in the occupation of Mr Watts, and also all that my messuage and tenement called Buda now in the occupation of Mr Passmore, and also all that my messuage and tenement called Charcombe & Orchard Hill now in the occupation of Mr Jewell, and also all that my messuage called Gordings now in the occupation of Mr Wm Clebbett and John Stanbury, and also all that messuage now in the occupation of Humphry Parrett (he having paid me twenty five pounds being a moiety for granting a lease of three lives on the premises), and also all that my messuage now in the occupation of Mr Cooper which is determinable on the death of Ann his wife and which life was granted to her by my late mother’s deeds, and also all that messuage now in the occupation of Mr Blackmore, and also all that my field or close of land late in the occupation of Mr Miles Hammett, and also all that my other land called Hill Head, and also all that my dwelling house fields & premises all which said last mentioned premises are now in the possession of the said James Chappell…
To hold to them their heirs and assigns upon the trusts following (that is to say) Upon trust that they or the survivors of them shall immediately after my decease sell and dispose of all that my dwelling houses now in the occupation of Mr Blackmore Mr Cooper Mr Parrett Mr Stanbury and Mr Clibbett and also the field lately purchased by me of Mr Hammett and also all that my messuage tenement at Orchard Hill and pay and apply the same for the payment of all my mortgages bonds notes and debts, and in case any deficiency shall happen after the same of the above mentioned premises that then it is my will and meaning that my said trustees or the survivor of them shall sell and dispose of such other part of my estate as they shall think proper (except my household furniture) and pay and apply the same towards the payment of all my mortgages bonds notes and debts and that the purchasers shall not be answerable for the application of the purchase money.
And it is my will that immediately after my decease that my said trustees request my aunt Miss Eleanor May to come and superintend my family with Nevell Darracott. And it is my desire that my dear children may be put abroad to school when my trustees shall think proper and also it is my will that my trustees shall pay the rents and profits (after deducting their expenses) of my estate unto my aunt Miss Eleanor May for the maintenance and education of my children and as I suppose that out of the profits of my estate that a large sum may be accumulated more than maintenance and education of my children may require before my son attains the age of twenty one years.

Now I do give and bequeath unto my daughters Katherine Thomson May, Eliza Thomson May and Maria Thomson May the sum of five hundred pounds each to be paid them when they respectively attain the age of twenty one years and it is my will that what my said trustees shall save from the rents and profits of my said estate shall be equally divided amongst my daughters. And if in case any deficiency shall happen in the savings from the rents and profits of my estate so as the same do not amount to the sum of five hundred pounds a piece for each of my daughters then it is my will that my said trustees or the survivor of them shall raise the deficiency to make up the sum of five hundred pounds for each of my daughters out of my estates by mortgage sale or otherwise.
Also I give and bequeath what I shall be intitled unto on the death of the Rev’d Mr May as Mrs Chappell’s marriage portion unto and amongst my three daughters to be equally divided between them share and share alike. Also I give and bequeath all my plate to be equally divided between my ~~~[lost in crease]~~ and bequeath unto my daughter Katherine Thomson May her mother’s picture and also a Barn at the head of Meeting Street.
And lastly all the rest residue and remainder of my lands goods and chattles after payment of my debts legacies and funeral expenses (and the trusts hereby by me fully performed) I give unto my son James whom I appoint sole executor of this my will hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have to this my last will written on two sheets of paper to the first have wrote my name and to the second my name and seal this third day August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine.

Signed sealed published and declared by the testator as and for his last will and testament (after an obliteration in the second sheet in the presence of us & interlining in the first sheet and that the purchasors shall not be answerable for the application of the purchase money.
