Devon County Members of Parliament, Part III: The Later Plantagenet Period (1399-1485)
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 46, (1914), pp. 478-496.
by
J.J. Alexander
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s July 23rd, 1914 Tavistock meeting. Its author asserts that at the close of the 14th century, Devon was far less distinguished among English counties than it became 200 years later, although some towns were notable in national affairs. For example, Exeter had a long succession of eminent bishops, strenuous diocesans like Grandisson, or experts in statecraft like Brantyngham and Stafford. Plymouth, Dartmouth, and Teignmouth had suffered in the French wars. The county was sparsely populated and not widely known. As greater opportunities for overseas adventure occurred, so Devon’s prestige rose. The paper is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
