The History of Printing in Devon
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol 11, (1879), pp. 497-515.
by
R.N. Worth
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, presented at the Association's July 1879 Ilfracombe meeting brings together its author's notes on the history of the printer's art in Devon. In 1476 a printing press was set up in England by William Caxton. Devon was the fifth county into which the art was introduced, when a printing press was employed between 1525 and 1534 by the Benedictine monks of Tavistock Abbey. Only two works from that press now exist. One of these was the statutes of the Stannary, printed in 1534. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
