"A village & parish among the high moorland hills, 5 miles SSW of Lynton and E of Combe Martin has 446 souls and 4363 acres of land including the picturesque hamlets of Parracombe Mill, Heal, & Rowley. L. St. Aubyn, Esq. is lord of the manor & patron of the rectory valued in KB at £13-10s-10d & in 1831 at £259. The Rev. John Pike is incumbent and has 64a 3r 25p of glebe, and a handsome "Rectory House" built in 1827 at a cost of £1000... The Church is an ancient structure {St Petrock}with a tower & 3 bells. Sir. P.F.P. Acland, John Knott Esq. (owner of Rowley Manor) Mr. Richard Dovell, & a number of smaller owners have estates in the parish. At Holywell is a circular mound called "the Castle"." A parish in Shirlwell Hundred, the Archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and Diocese of Exeter, 12 miles N.E. of Barnstaple, which had 409 inhabitants in 1831.
