PAYHEMBURY, a parish in the hundred of HAYRIDGE, county of DEVON, 5¼ miles (W. N. W.) from Honiton, containing 507 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £18. 4. 2., and in the patronage of the Rev. T. T. Jackson. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a handsome structure, and has a fine wooden screen. At Leyhill is an old mansion, with a chapel; and at Hembury is an ancient intrenchment.
