Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 28, (1896), illus. pp. 714-770.
by
R.N. Worth
Prepared by Michael Steer
Compton Gifford was a tything and a civil parish to the north of the Borough of Plymouth. It was originally in the Plympton Saint Mary Union for Poor Law purposes. It was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1871, with an addition from the civil parish of Charles. The tything included the small villages of Compton, Mannamead, Mutley, and Hyde-Park-Terrace, comprising a number of fine residences. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
