Nettleton's Guide to Plymouth, Stonehouse, Devonport and to the neighbouring country
with detailed description of the Dock Yard, new Victualling Yard and Eddystone Lighthouse
By
George Wightwick
London: Plymouth (1836). pp. 190, illus, maps, prints. [BL - 10358.aaa.3]
Prepared by Michael Steer
George Wightwick (26 August 1802 - 9 July 1872) was an architect and possibly the first architectural journalist. In the late 1820s, Wightwick moved to Plymouth, where he worked with John Foulston. This excellent guidebook is typical of its period. Plymouth's history starts with its first settlement at Mount Batten in the Bronze Age. It grew during the Roman Empire, until the more prosperous village of Sutton, the current Plymouth, surpassed it. In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers left Plymouth for the New World and established Plymouth Colony in New England. During the English Civil War the town was held by the Parliamentarians and was besieged between 1642 and 1646. Throughout the Industrial Revolution Plymouth grew as a major shipping port, handling imports and passengers from the Americas, while neighbouring Devonport grew as an important Royal Naval shipbuilding and dockyard town. The county boroughs of Plymouth and Devonport, and the urban district of East Stonehouse were merged in 1914 to form the single county borough of Plymouth. The city's naval importance later led to its partial destruction during World War II. After the war the city centre was completely rebuilt. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held in the Bodleian Library collection that can be downloaded from https://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
