The Siege Accounts of Plymouth
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 17 (1885), pp. 215-239.
by
R.N. Worth
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, presented at the Association's 1885 Seaton meeting presents an invaluable set of records held in the archives of the Plymouth Corporation. During the Civil War Plymouth sided with Cromwell and was isolated from the surrounding regions held by Royalists. The town was besieged from December 1642 to January 1646; the main factor in its successful resistance was the navy's adherence to Parliament permitting the regular arrival of supply ships and enabling parties of seamen to be rushed ashore to reinforce the defences. Extensive works were constructed to defend the town, including a line of stockaded earthworks on high ground north of the town. Various skirmishes occurred, including the rout of Royalist cavalry on 3 December 1643. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
