Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, delivered in the Large Room of Plympton Grammar School at the Association's 1887 meeting focuses on the life and times of Sir Joshua Reynolds RA FRS FRSA of Plympton, (16 July 1723 - 23 February 1792). Reynolds was an influential eighteenth-century painter, specialising in portraits and promoting the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealisation of the imperfect. He was one of the founders and first president of the Royal Academy, and was knighted by George III in 1769. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
