Notes on Plymtree

DOMESDAY BOOK: Manors of Plymtree, Woodbeer and Clyst (William). The third was joined with Plymtree shortly after Domesday. (The whereabouts of any surviving manorial records are unknown).

HUNDRED: Hayridge.

CHURCH: St. John the Baptist - 14th C, with 15th C. tower & Forde Aisle, & one of the most beautiful rood screens in the south-west. Parish Registers from 1538 (published in 1940). Was head church of Plymtree Deanery until 1874.

FARMS (Those no longer operating as such are in brackets): (Clyst William Barton), (Clyst William Cross), (Chowns Pool), (Cooks), Fordmoor, (Hayne), Herne, Greenend, (Little Clyst William), Middle Clyst William, (Middle Weaver), Middle Woodbeer, (Pencepool), Sanguishayes, Sewards, Stocklandhead, (Tyes), Lower Weaver, Lower Woodbeare, (Middle Weaver), Woodbeer Court, Woodbeare House.

MILL: Danes Mill - 16th C. Water mill. Ceased operation in 1938.

CHAPEL: Built by Congregationalists in 1851 at Normans Green. Now United Reformed Church.

SCHOOL: Church of England Primary, opened 1878.

PUB: 'New Inn' (built 1850). In 1960s renamed 'The Blacksmith's Arms'.
