"POUGHILL is a parish and village, 7 miles north-by-east from Crediton station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, and about the same distance west from Upper Exe and Silverton station on the Exe Valley branch of the Great Western railway, and 9 west-south-west from Tiverton, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of West Budleigh, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Crediton, rural deanery of Cadbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower conaining 5 bells, all cast in 1814 . . . there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1567. . . . The chief crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 1,735 acres; rateable value £1,548; the population in 1901 was 222."
