Syon was a monastery of the Bridgettine Order founded in 1415 that stood until its demolition in the 16th century on the left bank of the River Thames in Middlesex, on or near the site of the present Syon House. Although named in early documents as a Monastery, it is now known somewhat incorrectly as an Abbey, due to its having been presided over by an Abbess. The community, which held extensive lands in Devon was expelled at the Reformation, but returned to Devonshire in 1861. The paper pays particular attention to records of the Abbey's Devonshire possessions. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
