JOHN (COWELL) MORRISH INQUEST REPORT 25th APRIL 1854 HELD BY H W HOOPER

City and County of the City of Exeter (to wit):

An Inquisition indented taken for our Sovereign Lady the Queen at the Parish of The Holy Trinity in the County of the City of Exeter on the twenty fifth day of April in the Seventeenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria and in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty four. Before Henry Wilcocks Hooper Gentleman Her Majesty’s Coroner for the said City and County on view of the Body of John Morrish then and there lying dead upon the Oath of William Pannell, George Cotton, William Matthews, Charles Wills, Peter Babb, Robert Sanders, Francis Galsworthy, John Renouf (?), William Kingwell, William Dalgleish, Frederick Knott, Richard Wreford, Robert Wreford and John Fildew (?) good and lawful men of the said City and County duly chosen and who being then and there duly sworn and charged to enquire for our said Lady the Queen when how and by what means the said John Morrish came to his death do upon their Oaths say that the said John Morrish on the seventh day of April in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty four at the Parish of Crediton in the County of Devon being at work in a certain field there and there abouts splitting the Roots of a certain Elm Tree with Gunpowder it so happened that by the Explosion of the said Gunpowder then and there deposited in the roots of the said tree the said roots blew up and accidentally casually and by misfortune struck one of the fingers of the Right hand of him the said John Morrish by means whereof the said John Morrish then and there received one mortal wound on one of the fingers of the Right hand of him the said John Morrish of which said mortal wound the said John Morrish from the said seventh day of April until the twenty third day of April in the year aforesaid in the Parish of Crediton aforesaid and also at a certain Hospital called the Devon and Exeter Hospital situate at the Parish of the Holy Trinity and County of the City aforesaid the said John Morrish of the Mortal Wound aforesaid did die.

And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their Oath aforesaid do say that the said John Morrish in the manner and by the means aforesaid accidentally casually and by misfortune came to his death and not otherwise.

In Witness whereof the said Coroner and the said Jurors have to this Inquisition set their hands and seals on the day and year and at the place first above written –
