SHILLINGFORD ST. GEORGE

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"SHILLINGFORD ST. GEORGE, a parish in the hundred of Exminster, county Devon, 3 miles S.W. of Exeter, its post town. The parish, which is of small extent, is situated on the old Plymouth road, and is wholly agricultural. The soil is of a loamy nature, with a subsoil of red rock. There is no village, only a few farmhouses. The living is a rectory annexed to that of Dunchideock, in the diocese of Exeter. The church, dedicated to St. George, has a tower, and contains a brass of Sir William Huddersfield, bearing date 1499. There is a school for both sexes. Near the church are traces of a priory cell, which was formerly in connection with Tormorham Abbey, near Torquay. Sir L. V. Palk is lord of the manor."
