[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"SLAPTON, a parish in the hundred of Coleridge, county Devon, 5 miles E. of Kingsbridge, and 7 S.W. of Dartmouth. The parish is situated on Start Bay, and includes Slapton Lake, a lagoon nearly 2 miles in length, abounding in fish and fowl. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in agriculture. The soil is of a loamy nature, with a subsoil of dunstone. The Slapton harriers and Sir H. Seale's hounds hunt in the neighbourhood. The manor formerly belonged to Sir Guy de Brien, standard-bearer to Edward III., who founded in the church a chantry for a rector and four priests, with £10 per annum from land. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Exeter, value £96. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient structure. The parochial charities produce about £28 per annum. There is a free school for both sexes, in which a Sunday-school is also held. The Plymouth Brethren have a place of worship."
