President’s Address
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XIV, (1882), pp. 33-116.
by
J. Brooking Rowe, F.S.A., F.L.S.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was presented at its July 1882 Crediton meeting. Mr. Rowe commenced his address with a comprehensive retrospective on Crediton and its early importance to our county and nation. He then expanded the topic to an extensive retrospective on Devonshire and its place in national history. The Address is supported with five data-rich Appendixes (A–E). Joshua Brooking Rowe, antiquary and naturalist was born at Plymouth,12 June 1837, as only son of Joshua Brooking Rowe of Brixton, near Plymouth, printer and bookseller of Plymouth. Samuel Rowe, celebrated writer about Dartmoor, was his uncle. The Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
