President’s Address
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XI, (1879), pp. 29-47.
by
Sir R. P. Collier.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s 1879 Presidential Address was presented at its July Ilfracombe meeting. The President and its author was Robert Porrett Collier, 1st Baron Monkswell, PC QC (21 June 1817–27 October 1886) who was a noted lawyer, politician and judge. His address was essentially a retrospective survey of Literature, Science and Art with an initial focus on Landscape Painting. The Presidential Address is presented in a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
