Address
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 2, part 3 (1864), pp. 9-30.
by
E. Vivian, M.A.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was read at its July 1864 Torquay meeting and is a valuable record from the Association’s earliest days. Mr Vivian was an Association member from its inception, and was President for 1864-5, as well as in the following year. In succession to Mr. W. Vicary he became General Treasurer, which office he held until his death. He contributed numerous papers to the Transactions. His Presidential address adverted to the progress made by Association members in the previous year and was followed with a wide ranging general review from his perspective, of the contemporary state of human knowledge. This especially of the several methods of inquiry with their effect upon the welfare of mankind, as compared with those that existed in the most enlightened period of classical antiquity. His extensive Obituary may be accessed in GENUKI/Devon's Tormoham page. The Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
