Biographical sketch of the Rev. Christopher Jelinger, M.A.
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 32 (1900), pp. 249-270.
by
Frances B. Troup
Prepared by Michael Steer
Rev Christopher Jelinger was a German Puritan, educated at Heidelberg, the Sorbonne, Leyden, and Geneva. Troup presents him as a "man of great erudition". Persecution drove him to England where he resided for a time in Dorchester and was then employed variously at Exeter, Totnes and Kingsbridge. In 1631 he married Agnes Hayne of East Allington. During this period he lectured extensively in the surrounding countryside and was Minister at Stonehouse. He was preferred to the living of South Brent, from which, after 17 years, he was eventually removed as one of 2000 priests ejected in 1662 through the Act of Uniformity. He died in 1685 at Kingsbridge. An extensive bibliography of his publications is appended to the paper. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
