The Churchwardens' Accounts of South Tawton, Pt 1

Trans. Devon. Assoc. 38, (1906), illus. pp. 497-528.

by

E. Lega-Weekes

Prepared by Michael Steer

This lavishly illustrated paper results from a presentation at the Association's 1906 Lynton meeting. It is the first in a series delivered by Miss Lega-Weekes at Devonshire Association meetings between 1906 and 1909. The accounts of the churchwardens of South Tawton are replete with matters of general as well as local antiquarian interest; for starting in 1524, a period prior to the Reformation, they illustrate virtually phase by phase, the changes in doctrine, in ritual, in legislation, and in the administration of the Church of England, while their quaint language is replete with treasures for the etymologist. Records of the earlier years, down to 1540, are written in Latin (of a sort), mostly contracted, and interspersed with English or quasi-English words; but they are not as difficult to decipher as some of the English records of later years, in which the handwriting is careless and irregular, the words crowded, and lines interlocked in an evident desire to economize parchment, with the spelling so eccentric that some of the most familiar words almost defy recognition. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
