Industrial Archaeology of the Tamar Valley

by Frank Booker

Newton Abbot, David & Charles (1974)

Index prepared by

John Bravin

The River Tamar, the boundary between Devon and Cornwall, was once among the busiest trade highways in Southern England. On its banks was situated a thriving industrial community, diverse colourful and vital. Minerals abounded: copper, tin silver, wolfram and many others have been extracted, the famous Devon Great Consols being at one time the richest copper mine in Europe. It later provided half the world's arsenic supply.

Industry and agriculture were closely connected in the valley, forming part of an industrial complex that is now entirely shattered. This book, first published by David and Charles in 1967, reprinted in 1974, and since out of print, did much to rewaken interest in the area. The Tamar Valley was declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1995, and its industrial heritage, dating from the great mining boom in the late 1800s helped the area to be declared as part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.
