An old parish chest

Trans. Devon. Assoc. Vol 21. (1889). pp. 228-237.

Mrs Grace Johnstone

Prepared by Michael Steer

The very ancient iron bound document chest was located in 1889 beneath one of the windows of the north chancel aisle in the parish church of St Eustachius. The most interesting seals and documents it contained were displayed in a nearby glass case. The gem of the collection is a warden's roll of 1385-6, believed to be the oldest church warden's roll in existence. This has been framed and was hung above the glass case. The roll, which is in Latin is on a strip of parchment. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
