Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 11, (1879), pp. 262-275.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper, presented at the Association's July 1879 Ilfracombe meeting provides the text recounting the story of the hero Richard (Manly) Peeke of Tavistock. In 1625 England and Spain were at war. Peeke was serving in a naval squadron commanded by the Earl of Essex, that attacked a Spanish naval stronghold. After heavy bombardment the English captured the fortress, whereupon, they sent forces ashore to carry the attack inland. After the landings, sailors were sent ashore to forage for food. Peeke, of Tavistock, was among them. They were attacked by a patrol of Spanish musketeers. Peeke was wounded twice, captured and taken in chains to Cadiz where he was put on trial. He there successfully defeated three Spanish champions armed with rapiers and daggers, through skilful use of a quarter staff. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
