West Teignmouth Church, dedicated to St James the Less
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 36 (1904), illus. pp. 257-278.

Prepared by Michael Steer
There were originally two villages, East and West Teignmouth, separated by a stream called the Tame, which emptied into the Teign through marshland by the current quay. East Teignmouth was granted a market by charter in 1253 and one for West Teignmouth followed a few years later. The town's parish church, dedicated to St. James is unusual, being octagonal in shape. W G Hoskins, writing in 1954 stated "The two parish churches of Teignmouth are dull, though that at West Teignmouth (St. James) is something of a curiosity. It was rebuilt about 1820, except the medieval tower. Internally, the slender cast-iron pillars supporting the vaulted roof make a striking composition". Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
