Picturesque views on the River Exe

Tiverton: For J. Chaplin by T. Parkhouse (1819) 32 p., [7] leaves of plates

Prepared by Michael Steer

This rare book was recently on sale at Christie's (2011) at an estimate of between £400-£600. The River Exe is Devon's main river and runs directly through Tiverton. Its name is derived from the Celtic word for "water". The Exe was extremely important in the development of Tiverton as a town, as water power was vital for the towns booming wool industry. With its source at Simonsbath on Exmoor, winding its way through the Devon countryside and towns, among them the capital Exeter and Tiverton and ending up at Exmouth, the river Exe takes in and lends to some breathtaking scenery. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
