Old Tiverton or Twyford
Trans. Devon. Assoc. XXXVIII, (1906), pp. 380-390.
by
Miss Emily Skinner
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1906 Lynton meeting. Tiverton's name is thought to be a derivative of "Twy-ford-ton" or "Twyverton", meaning "the town on two fords", and was historically referred to as "Twyford". The town stands at the confluence of the rivers Exe and Lowman. An informative potted history of Twyford that supplements the substance of Miss Skinner’s paper may be found in Wikipedia. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
