TOPSHAM 1841 CHURCHWARDEN'S CENSUS

The Name, Place of Abode, Occupation & Age of a Portion of the Labouring Population in Topsham,
together with the number of Children in each family

The original, which has been consulted in the production of this transcription, is at the Devon Record office (DRO 1417A add Topsham PO 1). Though the main census is stated to have been taken in February 1841, it would appear to have been augmented (in 1842?), variously in pencil or ink in several hands after the original listing was completed. In the original the entries are "calendared", so bringing together, but not placing in order, all those starting with a given letter or in some cases pair of letters - these are given here as separate web pages:

This census names about 1260 people. In contrast the 1841 National names 3733 people. It is not obvious whether this discrepancy arises from the fact that this census is limited to "a portion of the labouring population", or because it covers a smaller geographical area.
