The Panorama of Torquay (2nd ed.)

London: Simpkin & Marshall (1832) ix, 288pp., plates: ill.
Index prepared by Michael Steer
Torquay's name derives from its being the quay of the ancient village of Torre. In turn, Torre takes its name from the tor, the remains of which can be seen by the town's Tor Hill Road. The town's economy was initially based upon fishing and agriculture as was Brixham's across Torbay, but in the early 19th century the town began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort, initially frequented by members of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars while anchored in the bay and later by the cream of Victorian society as the town's fame spread. Renowned for its healthful climate, Torquay earned as nickname' the English Riviera' and favourable comparisons to Montpellier. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Library collection that can be downloaded from https://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
