Torquay had by 1850 earned the titles of the Belle of Health Resorts and the Modern Montpellier. Its popularity had been helped by Thomas Shapter of Exeter, the first secretary of the Southwestern Branch of the British Medical Association, who had published in 1842 a comprehensive volume on The Climate of South Devon and its Influence upon Health in which he extolled the beneficial air of the area. This whole book was devoted to Torquay by Dr. C. Radclyffe Hall, physician to the Torquay Hospital for Consumption and a Branch of the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Chest, and to the Institution for Reduced Gentlewomen Affected with Diseases of the Chest. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the Bodleian Library that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries.
