The Ripplemark Controversy

By Arthur L.Hunt, M.A., F.L.S., F.G.S.

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXXIX, (1907), pp. 179-193.

Index prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1907 Axminster meeting. It discusses and debates the formation of ripple-mark, on coast erosion, and wave-action on sea-beaches and sea-bottoms, and in particular on the raised beaches and the submerged forest of Torbay. The literature on ripple marks is immense and has increased steadily since the first publications of Darwin (1883) and Gilbert (1899). A Web search of Science lists in excess of 3000 papers/annum referring to ripple marks since 2000. The article will be of particular value to genealogists with an interest in Devon’s geology. It deals principally with debate and controversy generated by the work of Mrs Hertha Ayrton who was awarded the Hughes Medal by the Royal Society for her work on electric arcs and ripples in sand and water. Her extensive biography with a portrait is available at the SciHi website. The paper is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
