William Pengelly, FRS, FGS [Part 1]
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 44, (1912) pp. pp.257-284.
by
Mrs Hester Forbes Julian (née Pengelly)
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was read at the Association’s Jubilee, July 1912 Exeter meeting. It is the first in a series of excellent detailed memoires of William Pengelly written by his daughter Hester. The presentation of her paper on the life and work of her father, she deemed specially appropriate and suitable in the year that not only marked the Devonshire Association’s Jubilee, but also the centenary of its founder, William Pengelly, as well as celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Royal Society’s founding, of which he was a distinguished Fellow. A handsome portrait of Mr Pengelly precedes her paper. This first in a series, as a form of eulogy is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
