The Mint Press, Exeter, 2001

Index prepared by Brian Randell, Jul 2002

"The event which was the talk of Totnes at the end of the seventeenth century: on an April evening the former vicar [John Prince, later the author of "The Worthies of Devon"] scandalised the town's inhabitants by his indiscretion in a private room in an alehouse with a young servant girl. News quickly spread through Totnes and local people gathered on the High Street to peek through a broken pane of glass as the shocking events of the evening unfolded and their testimonies, which caused Mr. Prince to be removed from his church, are printed here for the first time."

The witnesses:

  • Walter Bogan of Gatcombe, gentleman, 36 years old
  • John Tucker of Totnes in the county of Devon, dyer, 28 years old
  • Nicholas Gay of Totnes in the county of Devon, baker, 28 years old
  • William Amyott of Totnes in the county of Devon, cordwainer, 50 years old
  • Edward Rounsevall pf Littlehempston in the county of Devon, yeoman, 60 years old

  • John Atherton of Totnes in the county of Devon, Notary de public, 41 years old
  • Elizabeth Payne the wife of William Payne of Totnes in the county of Devon, clothier, 46 years old

Note: Names have been standardised, and no attempt to index separately the various minor spelling variations - with one exception, namely that of Hoyle, and Hoyle alias Gyles.
