WHIMPLE, a parish in the hundred of CLISTON, county of DEVON, 4½ miles (W. N. W.) from Ottery St. Mary, containing, with a portion of the tything of Rawleigh, which is in this parish, 557 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £30, and in the patronage of the Duke of Bedford. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. A fair for sheep is held on the Monday before Michaelmas-day.

RAWLEIGH, a tything partly in the parishes of BICTON and ROCKBEAR, eastern division of the hundred of BUDLEIGH, and partly in the parish of WHIMPLE, hundred of CLISTON, county of DEVON. The population is returned with the parishes.
