On an Estate Formerly Belonging to the Duchy of Lancaster

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXXII, (1900), pp. 407-411.

by

Rev John B. Pearson, D.D.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s August 1900 Totnes meeting. In it, the author, the parish priest of Whitestone explored the history of a small number of farms in his parish that had formerly belonged to the Duchy of Lancaster. The origins of that arrangement had been long forgotten. His enquiries were prompted by a note in Risdon's Survey of Devon stating that Whitestone was one of the places held by the Crown in “Ancient Demesne”, And that Ancient Demesne is “that part of the possessions of the Crown which belonged to it anterior to the Conquest. The tenants and occupiers residing within it enjoyed various privileges, which had, over time become obsolete. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
