"WIDWORTHY, a small village on a bold acclivity, 3½ miles E. by S. of Honiton, has in its parish 257 souls, and 1437 acres of land, rising in bold hills, and including part of the village of Wilmington, which is partly in Offwell parish . . . The manor of Widworthy was held by a family of its own name, till the reign of Edward I., when their heiress carried it in marriage to the Dinhams. It was purchased of the Chichesters by the Marwoods, who built the houses at Sutton and Cockshayes, now occupied by farmers. Sir Edward Marwood Elton, who was created a baronet in 1838, is now lord of the manor, and owner of nearly all the parish. He resides at Widworthy Court, which he has recently erected in the Doric order of architecture. . . . It stands on a commanding eminence, and the south and east fronts are encompassed by a beautiful terrace, 56 feet broad, and 163 feet long. The Church (St. Cuthbert,) is an ancient cruciform structure in the lancet Gothic style, with a tower and five bells. . . . The rectory, valued in K.B. at £11. 16s. 0½d., and in 1831 at £186, is in the patronage of Sir E.M. Elton, Bart., and incumbency of the Rev. Wm. Marwood Tucker, M.A., of Colchester. The Parsonage is a fine old residence, and the glebe is 30A. . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

A parish in Colyton Hundred, and the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Exeter. (Peskett: Part of Widworthy village is in Offwell parish.)
