WINKLEY, a parish in the hundred of NORTH TAWTON with WINKLEY, county of DEVON, 5¼ miles (S. W.) from Chulmleigh, containing 1436 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £21. 8. 9., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury. The church is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. A fair for cattle is held on the first Monday in August; and there is an annual fair at Hollacombe, in this parish, on Michaelmas-day. Here is an endowed almshouse, called Gidley's, for poor widows.
