Early nonconformity in Newton and its neighbourhood

Trans. Devon Assoc. vol. 16 (1884). pp. 489-497.

by

Edward Windeatt

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper, presented at the Association's 1884 Newton Abbot meeting, is one of a number by Windeatt on the early years of nonconformity in Devon- see his papers on Tavistock (1889); Ashburton (1896) and Totnes (1900). Nonconformists were those who did not conform, or belong to the Church of England. Dissenters were persecuted and often had to meet in secret or go into exile. By 1851, a quarter of the English population was nonconformist. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
