Brightlingsea is a village and parish,.. About 4 miles north-west from St. Osyth, and about 3 mile down river from Wivenhoe. The parish forms a peninsula, by means of the Colne on the west, and an arm or creek projecting from the river on the east. The oyster trade is carried on here to a great extent, giving employment to the chief part of the inhabitants.
