“CHADWELL (ST-MARY'S), a parish in the hundred of BARSTABLE, county of ESSEX, 3 miles (S.) from Orsett, containing 202 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £17. 13. 4., and in the patronage of the Rev. J. P. Herringham. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. This parish is bounded on the south by the Thames. In a wood near the highway leading to Stifford are several ancient excavations, termed Danes' Holes.
