"TILBURY (EAST), a parish in the hundred of BARSTABLE, county of ESSEX, 5¼ miles (E. by S.) from Grays-Thurrock, containing, with the liberty of East Lee, 264 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £13. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Margaret. The parish is bounded on the southeast by part of the Thames, called the Hope, where, on Hope point, is a battery for the defence of the river below Tilbury Fort. The lofty tower of the manor-house of Gossalyne was battered down by the Dutch fleet, which ascended the Thames in the reign of Charles IL In this parish was an ancient ferry; it is said to be the place where Claudius passed the Thames in pursuit of the Britons."
