"WIGBOROUGH (GREAT), a parish in the hundred
of WINSTREE, county of ESSEX, 6 miles (S. S.W.)
from Colchester, containing 410 inhabitants. The living
is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese
of London, rated in the king's books at £18.17. 6.,
and in the patronage of Henry Bewes, Esq. The church,
dedicated to St. Stephen, is situated on a considerable
eminence, and is visible at a great distance. The parish
is bounded on the south by a creek of the Blackwater
river, called Verley; it was formerly of much greater
importance, as is evident from several green lanes still
retaining the name of streets. A quantity of ancient
coins, enclosed in an earthen jar, was discovered in the
marshes, about forty years ago. There were formerly
salt-works in the neighbourhood, whence the place has
been called Salcot-Wigborough." [From Samuel Lewis A Topographical Dictionary of England (1831) - copyright Mel Lockie 2016]
