"At GREENSTEAD GREEN, a hamlet about 2 miles south of the town [of Halstead], another new church, dedicated to St. James, was erected and endowed in 1845, at the expense of Mrs. Gee, of Earl's Colne. It is an elegant structure, with a tower, containing a fine peal of 6 bells, and crowned by a spire. The living is a perpetual curacy, value £300, in the gift of the bishop of the diocese; the Rev. Willam Billopp, M.A., is the incumbent. There is a paper manufactory here. A National school has been built. The ecclesiastical district of Greenstead Green was constituted on the 23rd, December, 1845, and contained, in 1851, 542 persons."[From the Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Kent ... , 1855]
