"HEMPSTEAD, a parish in the hundred of FRESHWELL, county of ESSEX, 5½ miles (N. N. E.) from Thaxted, containing 655 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the vicarage of Great Sampford, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew."
